The Heart and The Rose

Nothing truly matters said the rose to the heart

Nothing truly matters that was always the start

All that has ever been has been done before

All the way back since never ever more

Yet the heart goes on beating with a will to go on

Especially if its desire is brave and strong

The heart will drum through the cold and the frost

Even after all the rose petals have become forlorn and lost

For hope sits by the heart waiting in silence

Until spring comes anew with poetic license

The hands find the soil and digs up the dirt

Smudging earth all over a worn shirt

Then just as summer’s heat begins to burn

The rose blossoms, opening with a turn

She greets the heart again

Smiling to her last summer’s friend

Glad to feel the heart still beating in her hands

Through the unfrozen lands

And every year they greet anew

Until one winter, that was dark dark blue

The clouds covered the world so grey

The heart gave out with a cry that day

And when Spring came around

Without the constant sound

Her heart no longer beating

To the earth in greeting

But buried by the rose bush thanks to a friendly neighbour

So she could grow anew as a rose and other hearts could savour

And she would tell them every year

The secrets only the silent can hear

Nothing truly matters said the rose to the heart

Nothing truly matters that was always the start

All that has ever been has been done before

All the way back since never ever more
